Objective
To ensure that personnel preparing for a gas tester role are equipped with the knowledge to conduct gas tests (for oxygen levels, flammable and toxic gases) safely.
Course content
Module I: Relevant Legislative Controls.
• Organisational and Statutory Requirements;
• Responsibility for making confined space safe for entry;
• Operational Requirements;
• Selection, use and care of PPE;
• Selection, use and care of RPE;
• Permit to Work System.
Module II: Testing in Confined Spaces.
• Confined Space Criteria;
• Type of production operation being tested for flammable and toxic gases;
• Hazards within an oxygen deficient, toxic or flammable environment;
• Carrying out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment;
• Using safe systems of work;
• Raising the alarm and emergency response.
Module III: Atmosphere Measuring and Monitoring Equipment.
• How to access and interpret the relevant operational instructions;
• Principles of atmosphere monitoring and measuring equipment;
• Strengths and weaknesses of the various types of equipment;
• Gas detector pre-start checks.
• Calibrating the instruments used in atmospheric testing;
• Practical Demo – Gas Detector Pre Start Checks & Calibration.
Module IV: Gas Testing in Confined Spaces.
• Hazards and properties of flammable and toxic gases;
• Behaviour of different Gases;
• Range and frequency of tests;
Module V: Interpreting and Documenting the Results
• How to interpret the results, to include both normal and abnormal
• How to document the results and advise relevant personnel.

Exam
A written test, with 10 questions. Minimum achievement of 70%.
