No training prerequisites are required to sit this course.
Objective
The aim of this course is to provide general site operatives with a basic introduction to work in Ex environments (those environments containing potentially explosive atmospheres including gases, vapours and dusts).
The course may be used to support relevant aspects of site induction, however this is not intended to replace a company or site specific induction for which responsibility remains with the employer and host enterprise.
The material outlined in this course sets out the content of training necessary to develop a basic awareness of the risks to general operatives when working in Ex environments.
Course content
Recognise the three components of the fire triangle and five points of the dust explosion pentagon
Determine an (Ex) hazardous area
Recognise the general types of locations which can typically include explosive atmospheres
Identify the types of work activities that can lead to ignition
Recognise physical Ex warning signage
Recognise the use of a permit to work in detailing if a potentially explosive atmosphere exists in the work location
Recognise the general construction and extensive marking associated with equipment in potentially explosive atmospheres
Identify the type of PPE specific to locations containing a potentially explosive atmosphere
Explain the importance of understanding and complying with the permit to work
Recall that personal equipment cannot be brought into the location containing a potentially explosive atmosphere
Recognise the need for specialist equipment to be employed and used in locations containing a potentially explosive atmosphere
Explain the reporting procedures
Exam
The assessment is taken during the course and is within the expected duration.
