Objective
The purpose of this course is to provide you with an understanding of common valves that you may encounter within the oil and gas industry. You will learn about a wide variety of valve types, their operation, and why they are used for a specific purpose. You will also gain an understanding of the corresponding safety symbols, as well as some of the more commonly associated problems to be aware of for each valve type. Employers should provide additional training when a new hazard/procedure/condition or piece of equipment is introduced into the workplace or “unscheduled” refresher training is recommended as directed to address inadequacies in knowledge and to address unsafe acts/deviations from procedures.

LO1: Identify valve functions and where they are used within industry LO2: Describe the concept of pressure-temperature rating as applied to valves LO3: Recognize standard valve symbols and safety markings LO4: Explain the functions of the different types of valves LO5: Explain isolation valves function and use LO6: Explain ball valve use, operation and commonly associated problems LO7: Explain gate valve use, operation and commonly associated problems LO8: Explain plug valve use, operation and commonly associated problems LO9: Explain butterfly valve use, operation and commonly associated problems LO10: Explain diaphragm valve use, operation and commonly associated problems LO11: Explain globe valve use, operation and commonly associated problems LO12: Explain needle valve use, operation and commonly associated problems
