Target group
The Sparrows Reaction & Awareness course is designed for novice and experienced certified offshore crane operators who require additional training to deal with emergency situations.
Prerequisites
Delegates must have completed formal offshore crane operator training and be able to provide evidence of the training and practical workplace crane operating experience.
Objective
This simulator-based programme aims to strengthen the basic knowledge, awareness and reactions of crane operators to improve understanding of what to do in the event of crane equipment malfunctions, failures or emergency situations. It will highlight the importance of correct decision making, communication skills under pressure and corrective safe reactions required to make a load, the crane being operated and the installation safe, without causing further danger to people, plant or equipment. This reaction and awareness programme does not include competence training for carrying out routine installation or supply vessel crane / cargo handling operations.
Course content
Practical elements delivered on the crane simulator cover: • Industry best practice/Safe Systems of Work (SSOW) • Safe use of cranes in the offshore Environment • Crane pre-start/pre-operational checks and inspections • Emergency procedures/emergency load lowering/crane operation limitations/individual operator’s limitations • Basic crane control/co-ordination in critical or emergency situations • Ability to make the crane and load safe in critical or emergency situations • The importance of effective communications and reporting procedures • Practical training on crane simulator with varying scenarios, to strengthen an individual’s response and reactions to varying malfunctions and emergency operating
Exam
Sparrows Offshore Crane Operator Reaction and Awareness training certificate will be awarded to the candidate on successful completion of all practical elements. The certificate is valid for two years.
