Target group
The Sparrows Offshore Crane Operator standard is recognised as the industry-leading standard and sought after across the world. The initial stage 3 assessment is the final step to becoming a competent crane operator, certified to carry out unsupervised lifting operations offshore. The assessment is for experienced operators who hold Stage 2 certification.
Prerequisites
Delegates are required to hold the Stage 2 certificate and must provide evidence of having been coached and mentored through supply vessel operations with around 90 hours of static and dynamic lifting operations logged. A completed Stage 2 Logbook or a formal letter from the delegate's employer may be submitted as evidence of the required workplace experience.
Objective
The aim of the assessment is to establish that delegates have the required knowledge, understanding and practical skills to fulfill the role of Stage 3 Offshore Crane Operator safely and effectively and is competent to carry out all lifts unsupervised.
Course content
The assessment typically takes six hours and is conducted offshore to ensure the delegate is competent to carry out all lifts unsupervised. The first initial Sparrows Stage 3 competency assessment must be completed at an offshore worksite with backload and discharge of cargo involving a supply vessel. The assessment requires a supply vessel to be alongside the platform. The crane operator will familiarise the Sparrows assessor with the crane. This enables the assessor to identify any areas of weakness in knowledge of equipment, safety systems and company operating procedures. The assessment will include practical observation of: • Operating the crane in a safe manner, displaying awareness of any conflicting activity • Control the crane whilst operating unloaded and with load on hook • Demonstrate the ability to remove swing from the load • Follow instructions given by the banksman through hand signals and radio contact A theoretical exam is undertaken to identify underpinning knowledge.
Exam
Sparrows Offshore Crane Operator Stage 3 certification is awarded to delegates on successful completion of the assessment. The certification allows delegates to carry out all lifts unsupervised and is valid for two years. Before the certificate expires, delegates must undertake the Stage 3 Re-assessment to ensure continuing competence and remain certified.
