Objective
• The assurance that employees have the knowledge required to manage Horizontal Directional Drilling operations.
Course content
• Understand the principles of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). • Identify the different types of equipment used for HDD. • Understand the importance of planning in achieving a successful HDD operation. • Appreciate the principles and practice in developing a drill path profile including prediction of settlement. • Understand the principles of how to steer the head of a drill string to follow a drill path profile. • Understand the principles and equipment used for surface tracking the progress of the drill head assembly. • The importance of monitoring and logging the actual drill path for site record purposes. • Know what size to ream a pilot bore in relation to a product pipe or duct and recognise the number of reaming steps that may be necessary to achieve the final size. • Understand the importance of monitoring progress of product pipe installation. • Understand the Health & Safety, safe-working practices and Environmental issues associated with HDD operations. • Know the regulations and operation guidelines relating to HDD. • Understand the importance of drilling fluids used in HDD. • Interpretation of ground conditions and the implications for identifying the different types of drilling fluid used in HDD. Understanding the influences and control of fluid quality. • Know how to handle the chemicals used for drilling fluids. • Understand the implications of disposal of drilling fluids.
