Target group
Any applicant who has successfully completed your Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (HOUSTM-359) course will satisfy: The Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(a)(4) and 12.602(a)(4); STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-4, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 5.1.A, 5.2.A, 5.2.B, 5.3.A, 5.3.B, 5.4.A, 5.5.A, 5.6.A, 5.6.B, 5.6.C, 6.1.A, 6.2.A, 6.2.B, 7.1.A, 7.1.B, 7.2.A, 7.2.B, 7.3.A, 7.4.A, 7.5.A, 7.5.B, 8.1.A, 8.1.B, 8.2.A, 8.3.A, 8.3.B, and 9.1.A.
Prerequisites
The Code of Federal Regulations 46 CFR 10.403(a)(3) requires training to be administered entirely in the English language unless specifically approved to be presented in another language. Students must be able to read and write in English to take the written exam and successfully complete the course.
Objective
The goal is to enhance safety and productivity in the maritime working environment by instilling the basic knowledge and skills appropriate to safety procedures and accident prevention with a familiarization of working aboard. Licensed mariners learn the importance and usefulness of: - Emergency procedures - Rules on maritime pollution - Good communication - Safety drills - Safety equipment - Human relationships - Accident prevention - Exhaustion recognition
Course content
This course references STCW Code Table A VI/1, A VI/1-1. The following topics will be covered during the training: - Crew training and drills - Pollution prevention of marine environment - Observation of safe working practices - Good human and working relationships - Actions to control fatigue - Review and assessment
Exam
In order to successfully complete this course, each student must obtain a grade percentage of not less than 70% on the course exam and practical assessment. 46 CFR 10.403(a)(4) requires a written examination. Course Instructors are not permitted to assist with taking written exams.
