THE TRAINEE MUST BE CLEAN-SHAVEN IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THE FIT TEST AT THE START OF THE COURSE AND TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PRACTICAL COMPONENTS.
Trainee must be at least 16 years of age.
All participants must complete the “Fatigue Management at Sea” online training prior to attending this course. A valid certificate of completion must be provided before the start of training.

PLEASE NOTE: Certificates CANNOT be issued unless valid Government issued ID has been presented on Day 1 of training for all ROC courses, including OPITO approved training.
Objective
The STCW Basic Safety Training is intended to equip seafarers with the essential knowledge and practical skills necessary to respond effectively to emergencies at sea.
Upon successful completion of all training components, in accordance with the Training Standard, trainees will receive a Transport Canada Training Certificate.
Course content
Firefighting and Fire Safety:
Covers shipboard firefighting systems, including fixed installations, alarm systems, protective clothing, fire hoses, nozzles, and their specific applications. Includes the use of portable fire extinguishers and breathing apparatus, as well as techniques for interior firefighting operations.
Flotation and Survival Equipment:
Focuses on the use and operation of flotation devices, inflatable life rafts, lifeboats, and associated survival craft equipment.
Survival Techniques:
Addresses emergency procedures, appropriate responses during emergencies, muster lists, onboard drills, escape routes (including watertight and fire doors), safe working practices, pollution prevention, and social and environmental awareness.
Personal Safety and Emergency Response:
Explores marine distress signals, survival and rescue processes, and appropriate actions in emergency situations, including identification and assessment of the problem.
