PST - Personal Survival Techniques (HOUSTM-363)

This 12-hr course (1.5 days) is intended to meet the training requirements established by the standard of competence for basic training as set out in NVIC 08-14 Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-1 of the STCW Code and 46 CFR 11.302(a)(1), 11.302(d)(1) and 46 CFR 12.602(a)(1), 12.602(d)(1). Any applicant who has successfully completes Personal Survival Techniques (HOUSTM-363) course will satisfy: The Personal Survival Techniques standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(a)(1) and 12.602(a)(1); STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-1, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 1.1.A, 1.2.A, 1.3.A, 1.3.B, 1.3.C, 1.4.A, 1.5.A, 1.6.A, 1.7.A, 1.8.A, 1.9.A, 1.10.A, 1.11.A, 1.12.A, 1.12.B, 1.13.A, 1.14.A, 1.14.B, 1.14.C, 1.14.D, 1.14.E, 1.14.F, 1.14.G, 1.14.H, 1.14.I, 1.14.J, 1.14.K, 1.14.L, 1.14.M, and 1.14.N.

There are no educational requirements; however, the learner must be able to read, write, and understand in English [(46 CFR 10.4.3(a)(3)]. Training must be administered entirely in the English language unless specifically approved to be presented in another language.

The expected learning objectives after participating in this course, the learner should be able to: • Define the priorities during an emergency. • Identify initial actions you need to take during an emergency. • Locate and extract information from a station bill or muster list plan, conducting, and reviewing of drills. • Describe the need to be ready for any emergency. • List the different types of emergency drill/situations that may occur. • Describe abandonment phase • Describe abandonment options for controlled and uncontrolled • Describe the seven steps to survival • Describe the major problems that must be faced during survival stage • Describe cold and warm in water skills • Describe exposure (hypothermia) • Describe first aid for hypothermia • Describe body hot spots • Describe rescue phase (things to consider) • List different types of rescues • Describe importance of personal protective clothing • Describe actions to be taken when required to abandon ship • List actions to be taken when in the water • Describe actions to be taken when aboard a survival craft • Describe different types of location aids • Describe how and when to use the different types of location aids • Describe how and where to find lifesaving appliances • Understand where to find personal survival equipment • Understand how to correctly use personal survival equipment • Describe different types of survival crafts • Describe advantages and disadvantages of different survival crafts • Describe what is usually found in and survival craft • Demonstrate how to don a lifejacket in and out of the water • Demonstrate the ability to swim 20 feet while wearing a lifejacket • Demonstrate how to don and use an immersion suit in and out of the water • Demonstrate how to survival float or drown proofing without either a life jacket or immersion suit • Demonstrate the ability to safely jump from a height, at least 1 meter above the water, into the water while wearing an immersion suit and again while wearing a life jacket. • Demonstrate, using simulation, how to use and test different types of location aids • Demonstrate the ability to right an inverted life raft, rated for 6 persons or more, while wearing a lifejacket • Demonstrate the ability to board a life raft from the vessel and ability to board from the water unassisted while wearing a lifejacket • Demonstrate the ability to stream a sea-anchor while in a liferaft
