BFF-Basic Firefighting (HOUSTM-53)

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Basic Fire Fighting (HOUSTM-53) course will satisfy: The Basic Fire Fighting requirements of 46 CFR 11.201(h)(2) [Basic only] and 46 CFR 11.201(h)(3); AND The Fire Fighting requirements for a national Tank Vessel or Tank Barge endorsement in 46 CFR 13.201(c)(3), 13.301(c)(3), 13.401(d), and 13.501(c)(3); AND The Basic Fire Fighting standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(a)(2) and 12.602(a)(2); STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 2.1.A, 2.2.A, 2.3.A, 2.4.A, 2.5.A, 2.5.B, 2.5.C, 2.6.A, 2.7.A, 2.8.A, 2.8.B, 2.8.C, 2.9.A, 2.9.B, 3.1.A, 3.2.A, 3.2.B, 3.3.A, 3.4.A, 3.4.B, 3.5.A, 3.6.A, 3.7.A, 3.8.A, 3.8.B, 3.8.C, and 3.8.D

The Code of Federal Regulations 46 CFR 10.403(a)(3) requires training to be administered entirely in the English language unless specifically approved to be presented in another language. Students must be able to read and write in English to take the written exam and successfully complete the course.

This 2 day (16 hr.) course is designed to satisfy the minimum training requirements set forth in Coast Guard regulations for applicants seeking basic fire prevention and firefighting as set out in Table A-VI/1-2 of the STCW Code and 46 CFR 11.302(c)(2), 12.602(a)(2), 11.201(h)(2) [Basic only], and 11.201(h)(3). The expected learning outcome after participating in this course, the trainee should be able to: - Minimize the risk of fire and maintain a state of readiness to respond to emergency situations involving fire. - Understand and apply principles of fire prevention, fire detection, and fire extinction, including fire chemistry, fire classifications, and extinguishing methods. - Operate firefighting equipment and appliances effectively, including portable extinguishers, fixed systems, and various firefighting media. - Wear and use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective equipment safely and effectively in fire scenarios. - Fight and extinguish fires using appropriate techniques, including search and rescue, ventilation, and boundary cooling. - Act as part of an organized fire party, including responding to alarms, following muster procedures, and maintaining effective communication. - Apply safe working practices during firefighting operations, including post-fire actions and hazard awareness.

This 2 day (16 hr.) course has been specifically designed to reduce the risk of fire through the promotion of fire safety awareness and basic fire training for all staff covering the topics of: • Fire chemistry and characteristics • Firefighting procedures and tactics • Safety equipment • Fire extinguishing agents and equipment • Crew training and drills • Fire detection and prevention
