PSSR - Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (HOUSTM-359)

Any applicant who has successfully completed your Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities (HOUSTM-359) course will satisfy: The Personal Safety & Social Responsibilities standards of competence required by 46 CFR 11.302(a)(4) and 12.602(a)(4); STCW Code Section A-VI/1 and Table A-VI/1-4, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 08-14(Ch-1) Tasks 5.1.A, 5.2.A, 5.2.B, 5.3.A, 5.3.B, 5.4.A, 5.5.A, 5.6.A, 5.6.B, 5.6.C, 6.1.A, 6.2.A, 6.2.B, 7.1.A, 7.1.B, 7.2.A, 7.2.B, 7.3.A, 7.4.A, 7.5.A, 7.5.B, 8.1.A, 8.1.B, 8.2.A, 8.3.A, 8.3.B, and 9.1.A.

The Code of Federal Regulations 46 CFR 10.403(a)(3) requires training to be administered entirely in the English language unless specifically approved to be presented in another language. Students must be able to read and write in English to take the written exam and successfully complete the course.

The expected learning objectives after participating in this course, the student should be able to: • Understand of new crew safety orientation • Understand importance of drills and training • Understand the Importance of individual duties • Understand the Importance of good communication in relation to shipboard duties • Define the priorities during an emergency • Identify initial actions you need to take upon discovering an emergency, ex. Fire, collision, ingress of water and foundering • Locate and extract information from a station bill or muster list • Understand planning, conducting, and reviewing of drills and their importance • Understand the knowledge of ship contingency plans for emergencies • Understand the need to be ready for any emergency • Understand the different types of emergency drill/situations, their corresponding signals, and action to be taken upon hearing alarm • Gain knowledge of escape routes, internal communications, and alarm systems • Identify effects of operational or accidental pollution of the marine environment • Identify basic environmental protection procedures • Importance of adhering to safe working practices at all times • Gain knowledge of safety and protective devices available to protect against potential hazards aboard ship • Understand how to properly use personal protective equipment • Understand precautions to be taken prior to entering enclosed spaces • Understand international concerns with accident prevention and occupational health • Understand Safety Data Sheet • Understand the importance of maintaining good human and working relationships aboard ship • Understand employment conditions, individual right and obligations • Understand the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse • Explain the importance of obtaining the necessary rest • Explain the effects of sleep, schedules, and the circadian rhythm on fatigue • Understand physical stressors on seafarers • Explain the effects of environmental stressors in and outside the ship and their impact on seafarers • Under the effects of schedule changes on seafarer fatigue • Understand violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault, and the continuum of harm
